The elements that make up a truly successful company are many: a focused innovative strategy, the right business strategy, sharp customer insights, great talent, and the right set of capabilities to deliver results. More important than any of these individual elements, however, is the role played by corporate culture – the organisations’ self-sustaining patterns of behaving, feeling, thinking and believing – in tying them all together. Yet according to the results of Global Innovation 1000 study by Booz & Company, only about half of all companies say their corporate culture robustly supports their innovation strategy.
Issues of culture have long been of great concern to corporate executives and management theorist. Culture matters enormously. Studies have shown again and again that there may be no more critical source of business success or failure than a company’s culture – it trumps strategy and leadership. That isn’t to say that strategy doesn’t matter, but rather that the particular strategy employed by a company will succeed only if it is supported by the right cultural attributes
Jim Collins (author of Good to Great and Built to Last) said “a culture of discipline is not a principle of business; it is a principle of greatness.” It will also help to further support a culture of discipline through collective clarification of values and behaviours any team member should expect from each other.
